Her books take place in the 1800's. This series is still good but getting slightly boring. especially since my circumstances are very similar to the authors. I like this book, but there are a few caveats. The Hardys, along with their friends and crew, Chet Morton and Jamal Watkins, learn that they have a secret competitor—one who’s using the race for a very unsporting purpose, and who will do whatever it takes to win. I appreciated the author's honesty about the problems of mental illnesses and the care that the nurses gave. A couple of the lead characters get shot to hell a bit too frequently for reality but a great story with plot twists to keep the reader involved and turning pages. I am not from the New York area, but when I read Hamill's books, he makes me feel as if I am a resident through his details of places and people he defines so well.
